My previous teacher messaged me last night! And she had received my ABRSM Grade 2 Music Theory exams results. Hurray! I scored a perfect score of 100! Full marks! And yes, is a Distinction! Haha, I seldom score full marks during my mock exams. Sure to have mistakes here and there, so actually I am very surprise to that I can actually get perfect score. I was like, are you sure no mistakes?
Ok, I am an adult, so what is the BIG deal? But I am still very happy with my results! Haha, and I think this will be the only time I can ever score full marks for my music exams, so let me boast a bit! As I move on to higher grades, it will get more and more difficult, so I would be happy to pass at my first attempt subsequently...

I started to scale down to fortnight class becoz now I squeeze another classical piano tutor for fortnight classes as well...unlike u, I m not taking a ny grading exams. So u are having pop piano and classical piano on alternate week? Actually how is the pop piano and classical piano taught differently? Are you also doing music theory? I heard that by learning music theory can help you in composing.
pop is fun and to me relatively logical method to improvise most songs. of course in pop, we dun follow note for note. i started pop piano with 0 background. I learnt the dao ge for melody line and read chords and play chord on left. with the derivation of the chords (given on most popular music anyway) we improve in progression. we should share more...let contact in any outlet if possible. I may be shifting hse and thus may need to hunt for next classical piano tutor so like to check out urs..
Wow, that's impressive! My little boy just took grade 1 at the same exam as you, i think and got 98. But he's a tad "old" for taking grade 1, being 11 years' old.
This music theory doesn't come naturally to him bc he plays a Chinese instrument and they use "jian pu" and not "wu xian pu". He's doing Chinese instrument at grade 7 level. He'll be doing his grade 3 abrsm theory in the March exam next year and then he'll be done for theory for awhile. Maybe eventually he'll do grade 5 - not sure as yet.
Jiayou to all of you learning as adults! I myself took up violin learning at age 39! But I stopped at 41 when I gave birth to our youngest. I'll probably pick up when he learns next year. haha.

Anyway, wow, your boy is progressing fast. Is ok to do the theory when they are older. I heard in fact is better, coz they will understand the questions better and struggle less. But think you need Grade 5 theory to progress further in practical. So, maybe try to let him at least clear that one first. Then he can really be done for theory for a long while.
I'll be skipping the Grade 3 exams. Might take Grade 4 exams. But if progress ok, maybe just go take Grade 5 exams directly. Haha. Save money =)
That's ok - the boy that just took grade 1 is not doing ABRSM practicals, so no such requirement. He's doing Chinese instrumental exam by the Beijing Central Conservatory Board that is held by NAFA here. In fact, for Chinese music, they read "jian pu" (simple score with numerical notation) so the ABRSM theory would tend to be a little more foreign.
Yes, I know the grade 5 requirement for ABRSM practical since I took piano myself. My daughter did her g8 last year in piano and my son is doing g8 violin this week!
talking about saving money - yes, why not? My elder boy who does violin took his grade 3 & grade 5 theory exams only. And for practical - gr 2, 4, and now 8.

Ya, I saw my friend's musical score when she was in the Chinese Orchestra in school. All numerical notations. Well, people in the olden days used their own method to write their own music, and there was little influence between the east and west. So, you need to learn their "language" to understand and appreciate the culture.

I'd never thought to have my children learn musical instruments. I know from my own experience how tough a journey it can be, so I never started them. But they all asked to when they started primary school ! And each chose their own instruments! The boys are interestingly excelling at it too (really never never thot about boys learning music. haha!).
And then now we have the little 23month-old. We'll see what he wants to learn. haha.
Oh, and yes about the Chinese culture - my no.3 who plays the Chinese erhu/gaohu and opera jinghu is very into Chinese culture. Don't know why?! Bc we are an English-speaking family. And I used to hate Chinese classical music, and even western classical music! haha!
